If the lowly extension cord is one of the least sexy preparedness items you can have on hand. Then the 3 way power splitter is its even less sexy distant relative. I have always tried to keep heavy duty extension cords on hand, the ones with the three prongs including a ground. They are perfect for what they do except when you run them indoors from your generator to power a bunch of items during an outage.
At that point you realize I should have found ones with multiple outlets on it. Most generators only have a couple of outlets themselves, allowing you only to bring in 2-4 extension cords at the most. If you are running a bunch of low wattage items you will run out of outlets rather quickly.
This is where having a bunch of three way power splitters on hand come in handy. They are inexpensive, are properly grounded and the way the outlets are spaced can be used for 2 or 3 pronged plugs as well as the biggest bulkiest adapter plugs as well.
I have half a five gallon bucket of these items on hand. I was going through Home Depot one day and saw them on clearance for under a buck a piece and stocked up. Even at regular price they aren’t expensive and are certainly worth having a few in or around your generator, or as part of your power outage plan.
Three outlet grounding adapters come in a variety of colors but the most common are orange or green. Color honestly doesn’t matter, just make sure you get them in the T shape and vinyl constructed. Those are the heavy duty ones.
